Create, rename and switch organizations

llms.txt

An organisation is the top level of everything in SrvYard. Its servers, sites, members, roles, teams, notification channels and settings all belong to one organisation, and the organisation's handle is the first part of every address in the app (/acme-studio/servers). Most people use one organisation per company, or one per client when they run an agency. You can belong to several and move between them without signing out.

This article shows how to see your organisations, create another one, switch between them, rename one, change its handle safely, and use the organisation-wide switches on the General settings page.

Before you begin

  • Room on your plan. The number of organisations you can own depends on the plan: one on Hobby, three on Pro and ten on Business. If you have reached it, SrvYard refuses to create another one. See Plans and limits compared.
  • Permission to change the organization. Renaming, changing the handle, the two-factor rule and tags need organization:manage, which owners and admins have.
  • Nothing else. Creating an organisation needs only a name.

What belongs to an organisation

Everything you can click on in the sidebar belongs to exactly one organisation: its servers and sites, its members, roles and teams, its Git host and server provider connections, its storage providers for backups, its notification channels, webhooks and API tokens, its tags and its usage. A server cannot be in two organisations at once. A person can be in several, with a different role in each.

Use more than one organisation when the audiences are really different: one per client if you run an agency and want to hand a client their own members and settings, one for a personal project you do not want your colleagues to see, or one for a staging playground. Use one organisation and teams when the people are the same and you only want to narrow what they see.

Handles are lowercase and short, so pick one you will be happy to see in every address for years.

1. See your organisations

Choose Organizations in the sidebar. The page lists "Every organisation you belong to".

The Organisations page
Every organization you belong to, with your role in it.
  1. Add organization. Creates a new organisation (step 2).
  2. An organization row. The name and its handle under it (/acme-studio), your role in it (here Owner), how many Members it has and a Settings button that opens its General settings. A personal badge marks the organisation that was created for your own account when you registered.

The search box finds an organisation by name or handle. Use View to choose the columns.

2. Create an organisation

Press Add organization. A panel opens with the title Add organization and the line "You'll be switched into it right away."

The Add organisation panel
A new organization needs only a name. You are switched into it right away.
  1. Name. Up to 120 characters. It is what members see, and you can change it later.
  2. Create. Creates the organisation, makes you its owner and opens its dashboard.

SrvYard picks the handle from the name. If you do not like it, change it in step 4. A new organisation starts empty: no servers, no members, no connections. Servers, source control connections, server providers and storage providers are connected per organisation, so you set them up again in the new one.

Note

The plan that applies to an organisation is the plan of its owner. A new organisation you create counts towards your organisation limit.

3. Switch between organisations

The organisation you are working in appears at the start of the breadcrumb at the top of every page. The small arrow next to its name opens the switcher.

The organisation switcher
Switch organization from the arrow next to its name at the top.
  1. Switch organization. Opens a list of your organisations with a search box. The current one has a tick. Choose another and SrvYard opens its dashboard. The choice is remembered: next time you sign in you land in the organisation you used last.

You can also switch from the Organizations page by opening an organisation's Settings, or by following a link that contains its handle.

4. Rename it and change the handle

Open Settings in the sidebar. The General page holds the name and the handle.

The General settings of an organisation
The name, the handle and the organization-wide switches.
  1. Organization name. Change the text and press Save changes (4). The name changes everywhere at once. Addresses do not change, because they use the handle.
  2. Change. Next to "Your handle is acme-studio". It opens the Change handle dialog described below.
  3. Require two-factor authentication. Members without two-factor authentication can only open their security settings until they turn it on. Turn it on once everybody has had time to set it up. See Two-factor authentication and active sessions.
  4. Save changes. Saves the name and the two switches on that card. The card also holds Explain failed deployments with AI, which writes a plain-language reason and fix steps on every failed deployment. The end of the output is sent to Anthropic with secrets removed, and environment values are never sent. It is only available on a plan that includes AI explanations.
  5. Upload image. The avatar identifies the organisation in the header and in lists. PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 2 MB, and Remove takes it away again.

On the right of the page the Tags card lets you create coloured tags such as production or client work and shows how many servers and sites use each. Tags are assigned from a server's or a site's own settings.

Change the handle safely

Press Change to open the dialog.

The Change handle dialog
The handle is the first part of every address; the old one redirects for 30 days.
  1. Handle. Two to forty characters, in lowercase. Some names are reserved, and a handle that someone else uses is refused with "That handle is already taken."

The dialog says it plainly: "The handle is the first part of every address in this organisation. The old address keeps redirecting for 30 days, then becomes available to others. Bookmarks, webhooks and scripts that use it should be updated."

Warning

After 30 days the old handle is free for anybody to take. Anything that still uses the old address stops working, for example API calls, links in documents, deploy hook scripts you wrote by hand and bookmarks. Update them within the 30 days.

5. Delete an organisation you no longer need

The Danger card at the bottom of the General page has Delete organization. It is covered, with exporting your data first, in Cancel, export data and delete the organisation.

Troubleshooting

  • I cannot add another organisation. You have reached the number of organisations your plan allows. The billing page shows how many you use, for example 2 of 10. Delete one you do not need or change the plan.
  • "That handle is already taken." Someone else uses it, or it was released less than 30 days ago and still redirects. Try another.
  • Links with the old handle still work, but I changed the name. That is expected. Only the handle is in addresses, and the old handle redirects for 30 days.
  • I switched organization and my servers are gone. Servers belong to one organisation. Switch back with the arrow next to the name.
  • A member cannot get past the security page. The organisation requires two-factor authentication and they have not turned it on yet. Ask them to open their security settings.
  • I cannot see Settings for an organization. Your role does not allow it. Ask an owner or admin.
